Is this the reason for UCG shortage?

This story made me wonder if this could be a reason that getting UCG is more difficult these days. I'm tempted to try one of those kits, as UCG as growth medium is more apealing than composted fertilizer.

A business mushrooms in California
....snip.....Today their company, "Back to the Roots," employs 28 people who collect 40,000 pounds of used coffee grounds a week, dry it on an industrial scale, and manufacture grow kits that are stocked in over a thousand stores including Home Depot and Whole Foods. ......."Our main raw material is not only free," said Velez, "but we're making a profit on it. And this year we're projected to do $5 million in sales."

Was not aware there was a Used Coffee Grounds shortage since there is not one around here.

Well I wouldn't call them "farmers" myself. They build kits to grow something (isn't that like a Chia pet?) and sell them.

I suspect that they may have an impact on the UCGs in a very local area but would be a tiny fraction of the total UCGs in North America.

I do find it interesting how a small idea can be built into something so large. Kudos to them.

I heard on a radio talk show that it was part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to raise the price of food prior to the passage of the new farm bill...

I think they have a marvellous idea. I'm sure the composters we know hardly make a dent in the amount being sent to landfills. I love to hear about entrepreneurs starting something new.
