Redwood sawdust?

My DH is a woodcarver and I can get my hands on as much redwood sawdust/chips as I can put to use. I also have access to as much UCGs as I need. I also have the usual kitchen stuff, household stuff etc.
What do you think about the redwood chip/sawdust? Too much of a good thing? Nancy

RE: Redwood sawdust?

Redwood is very resistant to decay which is one reason many use it for decks, planters, etc. The sawdust might be less so and may get digested quicker then the chips, but it may take more time than would pine sawdust and chips. I would compost, or use as mulch, any I had rather than just toss it out.

It would make great mulch!

I get some cedar shavings from my planer sometimes, and I use them for mulch or for starting the woodstove, rather than compost. Also you can put them in a paper bag and staple shut, and put them in your closets for that fresh cedar aroma.

I would start a bin with the redwood and the coffee and then I would add my kitchen items ie eggs shells apple cores. It sounds wonderful! I wish I had your access to the raw materials. I am always struggling to get more coffee ground and more wood. It is a daily battle. I would turn it not too often to keep the heat going. I would only turn it when the heat is dying down. I would remove some of the ready compost when I turned it and use it quickly before it breaks down too far to get the best results in your soil.

Tropical, you are welcome to come by if you're in the Sonoma Co area and we can load you up with redwood sawdust/chips!
