I hate that stuff in containers, or anywhere. Once it dries out, it's impossible to get the root ball moist again. The other end of the spectrum is keeping it moist all the time to prevent this, with the result being infestations of fungus gnats.

This is a total guess, but if you're using a commercial potting mix, you can probably get away with mixing in about 1/4 peat moss without changing the texture much. A lot of potting soil is made with that kind of stuff anyway. If you have some sifted compost, you could add equal amounts to balance out the non-nutritive peat.

If you're making your own container mix, search up a recipe that uses peat moss and go from there.
