| I home brew so I end up with 30 pounds of spent grain in my bin. The problem is I don't have any dried leaves to equalize the grain and it stinks like nothing you have ever smelled.
Can I use baled straw as a brown in my pile? What other readily available items can I use for browns? Thanks. |

| Straw is good. You can also use shredded paper and cardboard. |
|
| (Or unshredded.) Your paper towels---if you use them, junk mail. |

| You might call your local Cooperative Extension Agency and talk to the Master Gardener there, to get some ideas what kinds of 'browns' are produced locally as unwanted waste products. Depending on your area, you might find sawdust (untreated only), rice hulls, small wood chips, paper waste, etc. If you have neighbors who bag their leaves in fall, collect them and set them aside -- they're usually pretty light and store well if piled out of the rain.
