I think a lot of you found the hour long podcast I posted a bit too long, so I've found a 3 minute video on using penny cress as a living mulch.

Only three minutes - I'd love to a get a good discussion going. I was a bit scared to get involved with the last one...

Interesting concept ... if it smothers the others and then goes away, it's ideal (until they want a winter crop of something)

Burn units have been doing this for a long time - getting Staph infections is inevitable, so they deliberately colonize the patient's burns with a non-pathogenic variety that can out-compete the nasty ones.

The basic concept seems to be that weeds will turn up anyway, so it's best to choose a 'weed' with properties that suit your soil and your crop so that you only have one weed with known properties to deal with.

It's a case of 'know thine enemy'.

Interesting that medicine is using the same concept. Thanks for that info!
