anaerobic decomposition of grass clippings

A neighbor gave me a bag of his grass clippings and the sealed trash bag sat for a few days before I was able to get to them today.

I picked an unused spot and spread them as best I could. The stench of ammonia was quite acrid!

What is the best way to get the stench down over the next few days? Just aeration? It is raining now and I'm not sure if that's helping or not.

Probably already gone. After the rain, spread them around again to prevent matting.

Ugh. Well first, keep the rain off to prevent further anaerobic conditions. Oops! :-p

Mix them into some browns (dry leaves etc.) or an active pile after the rain stops.

Good suggestion about the leaves. I know better than to not have already done that.

Same thing happened to me today. I had a bunch in the trash that I forgot about for a week. They sat in the un opened trash can for a week. Im sure it was lack of aeration. The smell of ammonia was quite bad but after a few minutes in the open it went away.

I put them in my bin with alot of shredded newspaper and some wood chippings.

So what do you mean by "already gone"? Does this mean that no mater what we do they will not compost?

Aeration is the solution. Spreading them around in a thin layer is a good idea and in that thin layer the rain should not have much of an adverse affect on them.

@blazeaglory - I took the "already gone" comment to mean the same thing that you said, that the smell of the ammonia had already dispersed.

I have some finished compost from the county that I will mix in with the grass clippings tomorrow, the next chance I'll have to deal with it.

Ahh I see. Yeah Im going to mix in an already decomposing pile with my grass clippings and see what happens.

I have noticed that my grass clippings like ALOT of browns mixed in with them to speed things up
