Weight of compost?

Does anyone know how much a 2 cu ft bag of composted cotton bur weighs? There is a local source of organic compost that is $0.08 per ound and I am trying to decide which is the cheaper method. I find scales depressing so cannot check for myself. Thank you.

It will depend on moisture content but mixed compost -- such as one would obtain from their own compost pile -- weighs between 1000 and 1600lbs per cubic yard. That works out to about 37-60lbs per cubic foot.

$80 to $128 a yard sounds awfully steep
but it's apple and oranges
you're buying one (the bagged cotton bur) by volume
while the other is by the pound.
altough weight is a factor in the price, volume is what is needed when purchasing compost.
a cubic foot of material will spread out over a certain area whether it weighs 20 pounds or 30, as Gardengal mentioned above a lot of it depends on the moisture content of the product.
A yard of compost that is fairly dry will weigh much less than the same compost purchased after a rain but will be basically the same volume.
I hope I made some sense, if not, I'm blaming it on spring not showing up yet.

Thank you. It sounds like it may be worth it to take the truck into town for the compost that is $30-40 for a yard. I hate the time it takes but that would be a significant price difference.

Bulk product will always be significantly less expensive than a packaged or bagged product.
