Worms in compost - worms in ground

Newbie here researching benefits of worms. We just purchased a tumbler and have it mostly filled with a nice balance of browns and greens. Would you recommend I puvrchase worms and put them in the tumbler? If so, what kind (red wigglers?) and how many?

Also, in our in-ground vegetable garden, there is clay under the top several inches of soil. I'm planning on adding additional compost this year. Would it be a good idea to purchase worms for the in ground veg garden too? Again, what kind and how do i know how much?

Thanks in advance!

the idea of a compost tumbler is to "hot compost" quickly. This would kill your worms. check out forums for flow-through bins for an easy to manage vermicomposting system. I find they are easier to maintain than the plastic tray systems.

I am in Southern Idaho with clay soil and I have just ordered some Alabama Jumpers to help improve my garden and yard.

Except in a vermicompost operation earthworms are not significant digesters of the material we put into compost bins. Adding them to a compost tumbler, or any other compost pile is largely a waste of a resource. If the worms do stay that is an indiction the material to be composted is too wet. If the compost is just moist enough then it will be too dry for the earthworms to function in.
