| Hello all,
I have done many search and everything comes back "animal bedding". I am trying to determine if clean, never used kiln dried pine shavings can be used in the vegetable garden. The stuff I have is brand new straight from the factory.
If one does incorporate it into vegetable garden soil - what nutrients should be added??
Thanks!

If you intend to mix into the ground, compost them first. Or you can use them, as is, as a mulch on the surface of the soil.

What is the goal/purpose of adding these shavings to the soil? Lloyd

If any wood shavings, kiln dried or not, are mixed into soil that would cause the soil bacteria to get busy and digest them and that could tie up most all of the Nitrogen in the soil until the wood shavings were gone. Wood shavings can be used as mulch and that would not tie up the Nitrogen, or they could be composted and the compost tilled into the soil.

I would use them as mulch for the veggies, on to cover the paths. Just spread them out and water them so they mat down. They will slowly decompose, but that's OK

They have an unpleasant color.

Thanks everyone for the information. Think I will pass on the pine shavings and stick with the composted pine bark fines. DL

Are you looking for something to incorporate into your soil? I misunderstood that.

I like the color, much more than fake dyed red wood chips. I just added pine shavings as mulch to my new fruit bushes and tomato gardens. If its added on top of the soil, it shouldn't tie up much nitrogen.
