finding compost in nyc

I do some composting in my yard but I don't have a lot of space for it and therefore don't create a lot of compost. I have no idea where to get any compost for my garden. I live in Brooklyn in NY -- does anyone know of anywhere to get compost in this area?

Not sure. Try the Compost for Brooklyn organization.

Here is a link that might be useful: Compost for Brooklyn

There used to be a Compost Giveback Program in NYC, run by the Department of Sanitation. According to this website the program is not now being funded but I didn't see a date on it. You might check there to see if there is currently some compost available for residents.

Claire (who once bought a discounted compost bin from one of these programs in Queens, and carried it in pieces home to Manhattan on the subway. It took 4 or 5 days to get it all home. I later brought it car to MA and still have it)

I know how it is not not have the space to compost. If your garden needs soom food find a local hydro/garden store and pick up some cheap compost tea. Ther is diff kinds I found a dry mix (only 7 bucs!!) that contains the npk and living micros just like fresh compost!!All you do is add it to water shake and give to your garden. You can purchase all the food for your plants cheaper than it would be to compost in your case.

pearsaml - I live in Brooklyn too. There are several places to get compost but why don't you make your own? You can do it in a garbage can. Toss in all of your leftovers, trimmings, etc., from the kitchen, all of your weeds from the garden, and the leaves from the trees in the fall. If you don't have leaves, use paper - we get enough useless junk mail! I also compost all those blank checks the credit card people send me all the time.

It's better to have 2 cans - one for new additions and one for existing stuff. If you don't have leaves now, just remember that in the fall your neighbors will put out bags of leaves so take a couple home.

You can compost pretty much anything but if you compost meat products, you may get racoons or rats. That's not good. You will also get all kinds of flies and maggots in your compost. That's actually OK - they freeze over winter and compost themselves, but if you want to avoid that, don't put meat scraps in the cans. Besides, they'll stink.

And in the winter, if you put in onion trimmings, the squirrels will tear thru the can to get to them. Unlike ground composting, you will have to turn the compost from time to time - I dump it on the ground, mix it around, and put it back into the can. That's mostly to make sure it's distributed - the moisture tends to go to the bottom of the can so you need to mix it up a bit.

I get 3 cans a year. Starting now, then one in July, then one in Sept and then load up for the winter.

Short of doing that, you can go to Prospect Park - they're giving it away every week now. In the winter, after Christmas, they chip up all the Christmas trees and you can take the chips.
