| I have several window frames from a recent window replacement in our home. I want to start a raised bed veggie garden this year (lettuce, herbs, tomatoes, sugar snap peas, etc.) and I wonder if the paint on the frames will get into the soil and therefor into my edible veggies.
I'll remove the glass and all, but just keep the wood surrounding frame. I can't gaurantee that the paint wouldn't have lead in it. The likelihood of it is low, but I can't rule it out. Should I just not use these windows as raised bed frames? Thanks for your honest opinion! |

| If your home was built post-1978, it's very unlikely there would be any lead to be concerned about. You can also get a kit that will allow you to do an easy test for lead at most larger paint stores. If your house is pre-1978, your contractor (if you have one) is REQUIRED to test for lead before he begins work and give you the results prior to commencing, as well as using lead safe practices while performing the work. | Hi there. You asked for an honest opinion, so here I go =:) If you are wanting raised vegetable beds, the easiest thing for you to do is to build them new. IMHO by the time you remove the glass from those frames, you've spent probably more time and energy than you would to build new frames. How would you dispose of the glass? Also, it seems like a waste of good windows that you could use for a cold frame. As far as the paint goes, if you use the windows for a cold frame, the paint won't come any where near your plants =:) |
