| I did a ph test today, as well as a test for K+, nitrogen and phosphrous. I'm not sure if the test was correct. According to it the soils pH is within a neutral level, on the alkaline side. Nitrogen and Phorsphour were off the charts, while potassium was high, but not extremely high. I used a home made compost (grass clippings, leaves, and fruit rinds) with steer manure, and top soil with no compost added to it from the store. I've been told I need to add calcium. I guess my question(s) is... what can I do about the high levels, and other than egg shells what can i do to add calcium? |

| A soil test kit from your neighborhood garden center? If the soils pH is near neutral, leaning alkaline, why would you need to add Calcium? And which, calcitic or dolomitic, Calcium would you add? And how much would be needed? How soon after adding the compost and manure did you test? Was that material well mixed in the soil or was that mostly what you tested? I would till that soil really well and talk with the people at my local state universities Cooperative Extension Service about having a good, reliable soil test done. The report you get from that should tell you about your soils Calcium and Magnesium ratio and if any is needed which Calcium and/or Magnesium source to use and how much. |
