| Hi all,
My hubby and I are fairly new veggie gardeners. We got our garden started very very late this year. Have just been putting very small seedlings out over the past 4 weeks and we are in Central California. eek.
What we are totally unsure about is how long after putting plants in ground should we add compost or fertilizer?? When adding compost, I am afraid that it will burn plants? Yes??...No?? Again, our plants are all still very small. Like no more than 5 inches high and under. We have 3 tomato varieties, Swiss Chard, Collards, Choi, Kale, Peppers, Eggplant, Okra, Beans and Onions. Thanks in advance to you who are willing to offer advice! Mindy |

| As long as the compost is 'finished' and not hot, steaming, or smelly, it will not burn plants. You can practically plant in 100% compost. It's a slow release food. I dig a scoop of compost into the planting spot for each tomato, pepper (etc.) plant. It helps them get a good start. You can still side dress with compost, just use it like a mulch. |
