Help me interpret my soil test

I did the mason jar test on my soil and here's what the results were.

There are more layers here than I was expecting. Just for some background info, my soil has a bad habit of crusting and then water just runs right off instead of soaking in. My plants grow from it very well and there are lots of earthworms. BIG earthworms! Like 12" or larger!

I'm in the process of getting a soil analysis done, but wanted to do the mason jar test just for kicks and grins. That last big layer on top is what is really throwing me. I can see the sand, silt and clay layers, but the large light/dark mottled layer I wasn't expecting. Can anybody give me some clues as to what this is?

Thanks,
Mark

RE: Help me interpret my soil test

Organic matter is the lightest component of soil and it floats on the top of the water. Can't really tell from the picture what that is, but if it looks like organic matter then it probably is.
