| I compost in a big, covered rubbermaid storage bin. And kitchen scraps keep plenty of moisture in it. It's not big enough to get hot but I am hoping to have usuable compost by next Spring. I've given up on worrying whether my C:N ration is perfect and taken on the following method.
Once or twice a week I turn it a bit, dig a hole in the center then dump in my tupperware dish filled with the latest kitchen scraps, cut up junk mail and shredded toilet paper rolls; and cover the hole. Other than that: If I notice a stink or it seems to wet I add more carbon. Is there anything more complicated that HAVE to do? |

| Not at all - do what suits you. The usual problem IMO is people over-complicating, not over-simplifying. Then they get put off because composting seems too difficult to get 'right'. The only thing I'd suggest is having 2 containers so one can sit and rot while you add to the other. |

| Yea. I use a few 5 gal bucket I too dont worry about what I put in it. I cover with ply-wood and flys find their way in and make maggots wich help the precess then I dump the infested waste into the compost area. Hope that helped. Just let it sit in the mound and turn everytime you get a chance. Mine heats up just fine. |

| Just to clarrify OP states in first line "I compost in a big, covered rubbermaid storage bin.". not that he uses the bin to carry to a compost area as TheMasterGardener does ,so what goes in does matter |

| @ dickiefickle: You are correct. It's a 35 gallon bin with lots of holes drilled in it for air. And lid to keep out critters and rain. |
