Yes, the red Chips(heartwood)will last longer then the white chips (sap wood). If you can get straight poles about 1.5- 2.5 inches in diameter X 4-6 feet long. They are great for beans & tomatoes stakes. Put 3-6 together in a tee pee for beans or cucumbers, with lettuce or radish in the middle. The smell of ceder will keep many bugs away.

Which cedar? Western Red Cedar does have rot resistant properties while Eastern White Cedar does not.

Only real problem with cedar mulch, it tends to attract wild hamsters and gerbils into the garden. They're cute but they can wreak havoc...

There is no Eastern/Northern white Cedar(nick name), it is Thuja occidentalalis & is in the Cypress family. With Cedar you have Eastern & western Red Cedar & will have red chips. If you do not have red heart wood then it can be one of ten or more confers in the coniferous genera like Chamaecyparis,Cupressus,Pinus. If you have red wood then it will keep some bugs away, but not wild hamsters. You could cook them like you would rabbit & squirrel or ground hog. :-)
