I found this old bottle of Wilson Liquid Root Stimulator in my house. I bought it years ago, and it smells funny. Does this stuff go bad? I don't think they sell it any more. I wonder if should I compost it or because it spoiled should I throw it? I think it was supposed to be like root tone. I was looking for root tone because my grandmother used that to root African violets in water. It has no ingredients list. I am trying to root a plant that is easy to root over all. Maybe I want something that keep fresh flowers in water alive longer instead? When I used Wilson Liquid Root Stimulator it did not work as I recall. Hope springs eternal, but I think this bottle is spoiled, but there is no expiration date.

I heard you can use sugar to keep flowers alive longer in water but for the root stimulator I dont know.

I added some liquid sugar. There are flowers on these cuttings, but also some kind black gnats are flying around.

This is still being sold, in some places, and appears to be mostly in Canada. You might not be able to find it in California because it is a 5-15-5 fertilizer, high phosphorus, plus other "stuff" that is not listed anywhere I looked. Did this stuff stink originally or has it developed this stench over time? There are some people that do think that something that smells really bad must be very good for plants, even though many times people have killed plants with something that smelled bad. I'm thinking that I might consider composting this but certainly not using it on my plants. |

If it is high phosphorus, I won't compost it. I can put it the city wide compost. I think just using a tiny bit to root the plant won't be too much phosphorus, but since it spoiled. It used to be greenish blue but think it is now growing some kind of black mold. The color is moving towards black. It's not just chemical smell. It does come from Canada and the label is in french and English. I wonder why I was able to buy it here? Anyway it did not work either. I was trying to water root some plants and that practice hardier ever works for me. But, I found out that it is rooting them in soil and not water. I only bought it because there was no internet and it was all I could find back then. I want just plain rooting hormone.

Let me summarize. "I have this stuff. It smells bad. It's old. I don't know what's in it. It changed color and has mold in it. And it never worked. Should I use it?" I think you have your answer. :-]

The plants failed to root anyway with using it, so they would have failed with it I guess, but I got rid of it already. I am saving the empty bottle because it's a hoot.
