| Hi,
Any suggestions for what to spread in the back of our yard... beyond the lawn we have a slightly wooded area with soil and leaves on ground. There's a cleared area free of trees where the 15 ft trampoline is going, and we're thinking of spreading wood mulch underneath. We know it should be natural, so undyed, but are there any other considerations? Thanks! |

| Look for something in your area called playground chips or play chips - this is a wood chip mulch designed intentionally for use in playgrounds. It is typically a bark-free hardwood mulch that has rounded or blunted edges (tumbled?) and is clean and pretty much splinter-free. Recycled rubber mulches are also used for this purpose, but I'd prefer the natural product also. Sometimes you can find a similar product that combines both the wood chip and recycled rubber. |

| Many playgrounds I have visited in the past several years have layed down pea gravel, many times replacing the wood mulch they once had and sometimes replacing the rubber mulch. Wood mulches can, over time, compact and will need replenishment in a few years while pea gravel does not compact and should not need replenishment. Recycled tire mulches that have been put down on many public playgrounds around here have been removed and replaced with either the pea gravel or wood chips because of the stench from the rubber mulch on a hot summer day and because people found the children playing there were being exposed to unaccetable levels of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. |
