| I have pH 7 soil on my allotment and would like to use rockdust. If I'm not mistaken, the rockdust contains some calcium minerals, which may or may not raise the pH? So, should I avoid using rockdust on my plot? Or would it actually be okay?
If I do use it I was planning on using it at a rate of 3-5kg per square metre. Also, the soil on my allotment is quite dry since it hasn't rained for quite a while. I was wondering if it's possible for me to use a rotovator on my allotment soil? I didn't get the allotment until recently and so haven't had the opportunity to do anything with it up until now. I live in the south east of the UK. |

| Sorry, not too familiar with the effects of rock dust. On the rotovator are you asking if you can use it despite it being dry or if you should till at all? |
|
| It might depend on which rock dust you use. Rock Phosphate can have fairly large amounts of Calcium while Granite Dust and Greensand do not appear to. What makes you think some rock dust might be useful in that allotment? |
|
| A smaller amount than you plan to add probably wound be advised since you have questions. I don't think some granite or gravel dust would hurt if a moderate amount was tilled in. Old soils likely could be depleted in trace minerals. |

| Very early on in my organic gardening experience I was told, many times, that to get adequate levels of Phosphorus and Potash I needed to add rock dusts such as Greensand, Rock Phosphate, Granite Dust, etc. However, over the years I found that the levels of Phosphorus and Potash increased with just the addition of compost and other forms of organic matter, no need to spend money on these things which can make for human health hazards during application because of dusting. |
