This might seem like a silly question but this is my first attempt at planting something. So-- I bought a heliconia plant from a nursery and was told to separate the plant into a couple of different pots. I was also given bags of kelloggs topper and 16-16-16 from someone who knew I was going to try gardening. Would it be okay to use kelloggs topper as potting soil? I'm not sure what it is and what it will do to the plant? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The Kellog people make a wide variety of products and "Topper" is listed as one that is meant ot be used one a lawn. This is not a potting soil.

Topper sounds like it's more of a seed germination product...to be used when one seeds the lawn or even the garden. I expect that it is much too fine-textured for use as a potting medium. Fast drainage is a must, and this stuff is not designed to do that. I strongly suggest that you visit the House Plant Forum, here in the GardenWeb. You'll be able to receive lots of good advice about this plant and your options for potting mixes.
