| Hi,
Last season I rotated my crops, moving my tomatoes to pots. My (twofold) question is this. I want to reuse the potting medium, an organic one, but am wondering whether it's okay to do this. If it's not okay to grow tomatoes in the same soil for a second year, I'm assuming the same would apply for potting medium. i. Would the composting process eliminate the nasties? And ii. What about any I have left over? I will be dividing and transplanting rhubarb. Could I use the used potting soil as a part of that garden bed (along with manure, compost, etc.) and not be concerned that my rhubarb will suffer any adverse effects? Thanks everybody! D. |

| If your composting process generates a fair amount of heat the potential disease pathogens that might be harbored in that porring soil will be destroyed, so yes composting will eliminate the nasties. If the previous plant was infected with a disease specific to that plant and if the pathogen that caused that disease is harbored in the soil and if you plant something from the same family that plant this year might get that disease. If that plant disease was a general one and all of the same circumstances apply the plant growing in that medium this year might be infected. If you had a plant with a family specific disease and you planted something from a very different plant family in the medium this year that plant will not be infected. If the soil you grow your plants in is a good healthy soil then is it unlikely your plants will get diseases. |

| Thanks kimmsr, There were no diseases, soil-borne or otherwise. I can use the soil without any qualms. |
