Discard or salvage anaerobic compost?

I've had some raw compost materials (food-scrap greens mixed with paper towels) sitting in sealed buckets outdoors for a few months. I'm sure it's a mess by now. Should I mix it with straw to try to salvage it, or trash it?

Hi nygardener, It is perfectly fine, if you have access to leaves (shredded preferred) or any brown for that matter, I have a paper shredder in my office and I shred all of my cardboard and use it for browns, I used to shred my newspaper but I have so many leaves that I just recycle the newspaper and shred the cardboard, anyway... add a lot of browns (mix it up real good) and in two weeks you won't remember the mess you had |

OK, thanks! I'll wear rubber gloves and hold my nose when I go to unseal those buckets. Â Â Â Â ;)

Yup. Add a lot of dry organic matter to that very wet, stinky stuff, enough dry material so that is ends up being just moist.

What kind of shredder do you own that will shred cardboard?

Hi ApexAZ, It is sitting right here next to my desk, I just looked and it is a "no name" brand. I think I paid 50.00 from Staples Office Supply a couple of Years ago. All it says on it is "Max. 10 sheets" and I keep seeing them on sale (different store catalogs) and they now have "20 sheet max" shredders for the same price.....when this one bites the dust, I'll be picking up a bigger one ;-), but for now, it stills cross shreds cardboard like nobody's business ;-)
