How long Grass Clippings have 'N'

My spring soil test recommended adding nitrogen and as we all know grass clippings is a great source of such. I understand that at some point the nitrogen is exhausted from the grass and IÂm guessing itÂs when it turns brown. So IÂve side dressed my veggies with grass clippings and within a day or so they are already brown, does this mean all the nitrogen is already gone or does it remain for a time after the color change. If it's gone that quickly I probably should add more as it becomes avalable?
