 o
sea weed and eel grass -- greens or browns?

I'm doing my summer beach gathering for the compost bin and was wondering what these things count as.
And if I don't have enough browns, can I throw in the brown paper bags from Trader Joe's that I gathered in?

Thanks!

Most everything I have seen for many years tells me that seaweed would be a "green" because the C:N ratio is less then 30:1. I would suspect Eel grass would be the same.

True seaweeds are probably a lot 'greener' than eelgrass, which is very slow stuff to break down, IME. The old-timers around here always advised to be careful adding a lot of eelgrass to sandy garden soils, IOW not to use it as the only amendment. Not a likely scenario unless one's garden is easy walking distance from a collection point....

Thanks for the info!
I always love coming back to the mountains with my bags of seaweed and eel grass. Feels like I'm bringing back nutrients that may have leached out eons ago.
I find that those black plastic "contractor grade" bags keep the smell in for the long drive, too :)
