Found hypodermic needle in bag of potting soil

Posted by jjrogers68 Utah (My Page) on

I was just wondering if any one else has ever found odd items in there potting soil? I found a small hypodermic needle in my potting soil this morning and am a little paranoid about using the rest of the bag. Thank God I didn't poke myself. I'm wondering if I should take it back to Home Depot. What do you think?

yeh take it back also publicise it i would suggest that is not a good thing.

just lends more support to what they put in the composted stuff they produce at local refuse tip sites hey it all ends up in the potting mixes sold to gardeners and in many other products. lots have no idea what could be in it.

imagine if someone got a needle stick injury?

Take it back and write a letter to the manufacturer, find the lot # on the bag.

Thanks you guys, I am definitely going to return it. Dan, great idea about writing the manufacturer. I will do this as well!

I would take it back and insist on talking to a manager. If you just talk to the person doing the returns, you'll get your money back and it will end there.

I also agree with Dan that you should write the manufacturer and include the lot number.

That is a scary one but you know what they say in the composting world sh--t happens obviously the manager of the store didn't put it there what should he do about it a note to the manufacture would be the best route throw it away and move on

My money is on a farmer injecting cattle with antibiotics or other drugs, and losing a needle down in the manure, which got scooped up and made into compost that went into potting soil. But who knows, somewhere there could be a heroin-addicted mushroom grower, or a diabetic industrial yard waste shredder operator.

remember once you hand the bag back you no longer have any evidence.

i think the chances of it coming from a farm are remote as are the chances of it coming from a diabetic(the insulin needles i know of have very short lances and are a special device so you can dial up the dose, so are(multi-use devices that a user puts a new lance in for each use) used for as long as it takes to use all the insulin in the tube, and diabetics have access to free sharps kits for disposal purposes), if it is a standard sort of hyperdermic needle then it has come from some other source where it can be disposed of into a trash can somewhere, usually that is from those taking substance this way. it could even have come down the sewerage system as that material that does not go through treatment ends up mixed into potting and all sorts of soils including that recycled composed waste from the tip.

keep us informed

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. It sounds like untreated sewage is put into potting soil? I would not agree with that as that is not allowed in the US. There are standards for reuse of "biosolids" which is double-digested sludge. This material would have gone through the aerobic digesters followed by a settling pond and then into an anaerobic digester. The resulting sludge is sometimes used in composting operations. I don't see a needle coming all the way through that process.

BTW I was kidding about the diabetic shredder operator.

What brand was it? Potting soil or potting mix?

 o
RE: Found hypodermic needle in bag of potting soil

def agree with the above , there maybe a problem with the batch, it is not unknown for people to dispose of stuff in unconvential ways, expecially when drug users, I get the impression that in the USA there is no safe disposal for people who do this! good news is HIV and Hep C can't live outside the body for long, hep B is different and can survive for months in dried blood, so glad you didn't get yourself.
but if others turn up?? hate to think? they maybe need to recall the batch?

I would take a pic and call the Dept. of Health. Can't depend on either the store or the manufacturer to care.

Of course you could ignore but what if...

I work at The Home Depot and would like to apologize. Did you return this item to the store yet? Please feel free to contact me directly so we can get this resolved. Also I want to look into this further, so please send a note to me at information@homedepot.com.

Trust me I use to work at Home Depot. If you return it there they will just throw it away and it will end there. I would hold onto it and go to the manufacture with it. I might even call the news if it was me.
Len as a mom to a type on diabetic who has done shots daily for 6 years, he gets normal syringes to dose his insulin.
But with the risk of Aids or other health issues I would want the public to know about this.
