almost free, easy compost bin

If you live near an air conditioning installation company you should know that they usually take the old air conditioners from peoples homes to recycle the valuable copper and compressor parts used to operate the AC. Each unit, as you have seen in your backyard, comes in a metal shell surrounded by vents to allow the coil to cool off. If you go by your local AC shop and ask nicely I'm sure they would be happy to give you an old shell to an air conditioner, as this shell is practically worthless in scrap value and is a hassle to break down and carry to the scrap yard. This helps to save the environment by re issuing a purpose for old junk and it also beats spending $99 on some plastic barrel at the hardware store. I have been thinking of a way to create an AC shell that can be rotated on its side so maybe soon Ill post up some pics.

Would the paint be an issue?

Great idea!

Steel scrap is going for about 10 c/lb right now so they're not losing much, but some shops might not want to give it away.

In the grand scheme of things the paint won't mean much. Other than metals (and the lead is pretty much gone these days) there isn't much else in hardened paint that can leach out. Even if there was, the amount is very small. JMHO.

I would love to see a picture, or better yet a DIY article on how to build one.
