Stuff people throw away...

I get lots of different things turn up in the yard trimmings bags. Today I got two bags of unopened, composted, cattle manure. I often get these bags filled with clippings as people re-use the bags but these had not even been opened.

Go figure.

Hmmm...so tell me - what does a guy who makes tons of his own compost do with composted manure? Weird.

:-)

I have no idea what to do with them...probably give 'em away to the Garden Club or Communities in Bloom committee.

It only costs like 99 cents a bag, so I think it was easy to part with.

.99 a bag??? Where can I get that price?

Home depot dot com, do a search for the word steer, a bag costing 1.17 cents will show up.

 o

"steer" doesn't return any manure ... there are steering wheels though.

I bet that was landscaping guys. Brought more than they needed and just threw it. Or, someone bought it, wasn't satisfied (imagine that) and tossed it.

Amazing what work crews will discard. I've been watching a construction rolloff for a very small but lengthy remodel at a medical bldg. They've thrown away several cu-ft sized boxes of premixed drywall mud, opened but essentially full. I think every time they have a joint to repair they open a fresh box, use one scoop and toss the rest. I haul it to Habitat for Humanity.

It did work for me on the home depot site, they correct the spelling and a bag with a drawing of a cow comes up, in case one can't read either. There is so much cow waste, they could give it away. That is why I call it the "two buck chuck" of the compost world.

$2.49 here in Winnipeg.

Seems pretty expensive to me for the amount you actually get.

Maybe you guys eat less fast food hamburgers? It used to be 99 cents so 1.17 seems over priced to me. I never use it. I tried it once and it did not heat my bin, and not only that it made my dogs want to eat my compost. It was bad stuff.

 o
RE: Stuff people throw away...

It's already composted so of course it won't heat up. At least, we hope it's already composted. I'd hate to try to buy a bag of fresh manure. P - U!

What is it with dogs anyway. :-\

Some of the stuff spilled out of a hole I put in it and it looked like it was okay stuff. I think it had a fair amount of peat in it. Based on it's analysis I don't think there was a lot of manure in there.

Dogs like to eat unsavory things even when they are fat and get fed the finest foods.

 o
RE: Stuff people throw away...

Yeah. My idiot dog gets primo food, but dug up a dead cat and was eating it.

Got another of these bags this week. Confusing but who knows why they are throwing them out.

I opened it up just to see what it is like. Seems like it is mostly dark peat moss. No odour, light and fluffy. Having a large amount of peat as the main ingredient would explain why the nutrients are so low.

I dumpster-dived at the Ace Hardware last night. They throw out a lot of plastic flats for plants this time of year, which I collect and donate to a local greenhouse/nursery operation - they love them. And there was a pile of distressed plants, which I sorted out and repotted to see if I can get them going. 8 Salvia and one each marigold, petunia and begonia. Poor little plants. :-] The wife loves Salvia so I get brownie points for saving them.

I have a friend who works at Walmart, and routinely brings home truckloads of plant trays and pots that they throw out.
