Unknown plants growing in my compost

These plants keep appearing in my compost heap every year and I would really like to know what they are and what I should do with them. Should I pull them out, turn them over?
Any help would be appreciated.

Sunflowers? Any pix of them a bit bigger?

Sunflowers? I don't think so, I haven't been near a sunflower and I get the same things popping up in my compost.
No, I think, with all what we throw in there, it could the start of practically anything, from old vegetable leavings, to weeds we pick up with the clippings.
They are easily lifted out and disposed of.

I didn't think potatoes could grow from skins that didn't have 'eyes' but I keep finding them growing in my compost piles.
The usual thinking is weeds can be thrown into a pile and as long as they haven't gone to seed will decompose with the rest of what we give it.
Yeah......well, I don't believe that---a weed is a weed and if you give it room, it will turn you out of house and home.

It is difficult to tell by looking at just germinated seedlings with only the cotlydons. What materials that might have contributed seeds did you put in that compost pile?

When I pulled one of these plants out, I saw that it had come out of a seed that looked kind of like a squash seed or a cantaloupe seed. I eat a lot of hard squash, so I think that might be it. I am careful not to knowingly put weeds into my compost pile.

Thanks for your answers.

I have random melon-type plants in our bin all the time. I tried letting a few grow one year and they turned out 'melon-y' looking, but never even put out a single blossom, much less any actual produce! Now I just turn 'em all back into the pile. :)

In the summer if we go through cantaloupe from the grocery store, the seeds and rinds tend to wind up in the bin. I'm betting they were sprouts from some sterile variety. *shrug*

(Although yours DO look an awful lot like sunflower seedlings, also; is there a birdfeeder around you that the little beggars might be transferring from?)

Maybe you could plant one somewhere and see what happens. :)

I dumped about 3 dozen scallion ends into the bin last week, turned it this morning to find they all have grown 3-4 inches, took em out and planted them next to the pile.

Works for me
