| That depends on any number of things, mostly how active the Soil Food Web is in that soil. Up here, in my sand, the soil bacteria will digest 1/2 inch of compost and the 4 to 6 inches of shredded leaves I put on the soil in the fall by the following August, but the humus (residual organic matter) level in the soil will increase. However, if I add no organic matter (compost and whatever else) the humus level will diminish until there is no organic matter left although that might take years. Further south, in warmer climates, where the Soil Food Web is active much longer the organic matter will be digested faster. Organic matter sometimes is digested faster in sandy soils then in clay soils, also. So how long compost, or soil conditioner, will last in beach sand depends on where you are as well as how active the Soil Food Web is. |
