| Always inspect compost before having it delivered. Oops.
I believe what I received was mushroom compost or composted manure rather than what I had in mind (composted leaves and other organic material). It's black and very fine, like very rich topsoil. It holds water well, so it's not a total loss, but I was looking to use the compost as both an ammendment AND a mulch. Sooo, where do I go from here? I have several options: 1. Get free compost from the municipal lot. I would have to find someone with a bulldozer and dump truck who would pick it up for me, though. (Any ideas for what kind of business I should look for that service?) 2. Pay to have mulch delivered. Mulch is $28/yd. where their compost was only $22/yd. It's going to be hard to persuade the hubby on that one when I was so adamant about compost rather than mulch.... 3. Put partially-composted wood chips from the backyard on the front garden. (This involves many trips over an acre with a wheelbarrow but is FREE). What do you guys think? Thanks. |

| My Personal opinion: If it is as you describe, it is perfect as both an ammendment AND a mulch. I use my compost as my mulch, it is terrific ;-) |

| Your soil looks absolutely great! Actually, what was delivered is not as "meaty" as what you have there. It is much finer, which is why I don't know if it's going to work as a mulch. I'm going to have to take some pictures. BRB. |

| Good composted manure and spent mushroom soil should look like good, rich earth and smell like good, rich earth, a pleasant odor. If what you have is like that you have a good start on greating a good, healthy garden. |

| I agree - sounds like you have nice stuff - if you want the bulkier stuff on top like the wood chips, maybe spread a thin layer of the fine stuff down and then apply the bulkier stuff such as the wood chips. |
