| I had a great discovery yesterday. Last fall I filled my 4 big open compost bins with shredded leaves, manure, coffee grounds etc. By spring I always have the start to some great compost. I also shredded about 100 bags of leaves and stored them outside in the big 55 gallon rubber garbage cans. Late in the fall after I had already filled the 4 open bins, I happened to get 30 pumpkins and a bunch of rotten apples and green tomatoes. Also got a lot of extra coffee grounds. So instead of storing just the dry shredded leaves in the garbage cans, I threw in smashed pumpkins and the rest of the apples, tomatoes and grounds. Decided to wet it down a little, just to see what would happen. Most of the garbage cans had holes in the bottom, as well as splits and holes in the tops and sides, so I figured excess water would run out. I half expected a big smelly mess when I opened up the tops of the cans this spring because I didn't think it would get enough air, but instead, I found 8 barrels of almost completed compost. YUM! Much better stuff than what was in my open bins. Don't know what all made the difference, but I going to do it again this fall. The only downside is I have no "browns" this year to mix with all the grass clippings. |
