DIY small compost tumbler

Eek, I've just discovered rats in my compost pile. I'm guessing it's all the food scraps that we throw in there. We don't really turn the pile much (if at all), and I'm probably not going to start.

Since I live in the city, I suppose I should try to do something about the rats. Here's my current thought: keep the big, open cold pile for garden trimmings & other non-food stuff. Get one or two small compost tumblers for kitchen waste, and then feed that either directly into the garden or into the cold compost pile once it's changed from yummy rat food into dirt. I'm thinking two separate tumblers so I can feed new waste into one while the other is cooking.

So, here are my questions:
1) Is this a good plan?
2) How can I rig up a couple of small compost tumblers for kitchen waste? Do they need to be of a certain size to build up sufficient heat?

Thanks!
-Kim

i've been using a plastic 55 gallon drum with holes all around and the top cut out and covered in diamond mesh. 2 small hinges on the door. The pipe sticking out is 2" pvc drilled around like drain pipe stuck into a standard coupler that matches the threads on the food grade drums.

i just roll it on the ground now, its easier, and i get my picinin table back.

Get a source of horse manure/bedding fill the tumbler than add your kitchen scraps in the middle.

Ron, that's got to be one of the best re-uses of a radio wagon flyer I've ever seen!

1) It's a great idea. Tumblers work very well at dealing with varmints.
2) Smaller tumblers may have difficulty getting the really high heat (at least my little one does) but I don't put much in it that would require a high heat to kill anything. Mostly kitchen stuff like UCGs, veggie trimmings, fruit stuff etc etc. There are many ideas for setting up small tumblers, from the elaborate to the simple.

just a couple of glamor veggie/ flower shots from this years garden.

I liked the radio flyer for awhile then i started to become difficult to turn. the front wheels were collapsed before i turned it on it's back for composting purposes.
