Water Problem In Garden

Hello all, I am hoping someone can help with a problem my dad is having with his vegetable garden.. His garden is made of raised rows that are approx. 8-10 inches deep and a foot wide. They are made of mostly leaf compost/leaf mold I would say about 80%. The rows seem to stay quite damp on the inside, soil holds together when you try to make a ball yet every vegetable wilts in the afternoon sun. The garden gets sun from 8-3. the plants themselves are very healthy and some are very large, we picked cauliflower yesterday, some the size of bowling balls. He does have maple trees growing around one side of the garden. We noticed his peppers are showing signs of Blossom End Rot. what can possibly be causing the daily wilting and BER? He has to water daily and soon as he adds water they all perk up, yet that row never seems to be dry.

Thanks so much,

Amy

That sounds quite odd since the soil appears moist yet the plants perk up after watering. Seems like they are needing water if they are wilting. Blossom end rot happens when watering isn't consistant IMHO. He might, and I only guess, might have too much organic matter and not enough soil in the mix to make contact with the growing medium.

That was our thought, possibly the plants can not receive the water unless it is in heavy amounts due to all the matter..WE even tossed around the idea that the trees may be robbing the water but never came across any feeder roots when we took out the cauliflower yesterday.. We have really scratched our heads on this one..

g'day amy,

vegetables or any plant for that matter wilting in the sun is just part of the plants survival technique to minimise loss of moisture through respiration whatever.

the test of whether they are wilting for the want of water comes late in the afternoon if the plant rejuvinates then it has all the moisture it needs, if it stays wilted into the evening then it coud be a watering issue of some other issue. by the sounds of it your fathers beds are doing the right thing if he mulches well he should need to do minimum water, over here in summer our plants generally get a good water around their root sytems once a week, yes most wilt in the noon day sun.

like i said above if they wilt into the night then i know next day in the afternoon they will need a water if not right then and there, i'm a water miser.

Well, my reply disappeared.

My much abbreviated thought is there isn't enough mineral soil to deliver Ca.
