| If I pop the plastic case open on my used Brita water pitcher filter, can I compost the contents? Is it just charcoal? Or is there something nasty in there?
Thanks. |

| This was asked recently; it was a split decision. My two cents is no, don't compost it. |
Here is a link that might be useful: earlier post on water filters

| Thanks for the link. I'm buying a house tomorrow and I'm super excited to begin composting, but I obviously don't want to do more harm than good. |

| Best of luck with the new house! |

| Those small filters that fit over faucets or over a container and which you pour water through are simply activated charcoal and will not present any harm if composted. Activated charcoal is quite often used, 1 teaspoon in an 8 ounce glass of water, to absorb in someones stomach a poison they have consumed, ingested. Activated charcoal is used as the filtering medium in fish tanks. There are Activated Charcoal tablets for people to take for "acid indigestion" or other reasons. |
