 o
putrified plant matter odor

I emptied my tumbler composter yesterday and restarted with a bucket of plant clippings I had been collecting. I had topped the bucket with dry shredded straw and did not realize how stinky it was with putrification until I dumped it in the composter. Now the entire compost barrel REEKS!! Is there any way to neutralize the odor?? I added some dry matter (shredded paper) and gave it several spins but I can hardly stand getting near it right now.

Tumblers have a drainage problem. If it was a bin and it would drain to the ground, it would not be gross. It's just too wet so it got anaerobic.

The majority of the time that material to be composted smells bad is because excess water has displaced the air needed and anaerobic (in the absence of air) bacteria are at work. So was the material in the bottom of that bucket quite wet? If so, some dryer material can help if mixed in.

If it's not raining, leave the door open to allow air in and moisture out.

keep adding more carbon material to help sop up some of the extra moisture.
