Sorry if this has been answered already, but I can't find the answer. Is it OK to put sodium silicate "crystal" kitty litter into the compost? I am not going to buy it again...will go back to pine or newspaper, but the box needs changing NOW!

I wouldn't worry about the litter itself, but I wouldn't put carnivore faeces in compost you'll use on edible plants. I'm an extremely 'casual' composter and that would be pretty much my only rule. Got a place to dig holes? A separate 'cat' heap for trees, ornamentals etc maybe...

I'd worry more about the litter than the feces . . . See the link below.

Most litter is made of clay, which when wet will form a gooey sticky mass saturated with cat pee. Now the stuff you have is silica, which is similar to sand, but it's in a form that may act very similar. And since it is not organic it will not break down. I would not recommend it for the compost. If you want to compost, though, you can do it by using an organic based litter like Feline Pine, Yesterday's News, or the corn or wheat based products. And it's best to use a dedicated pile or bin for pet waste, and use the resulting compost only on non-food areas.

My concern is the word sodium...I don't want to add SALT to my soil. I have always used the pine or newspaper stuff, but was having a party and wanted my kitty box to be appealing! The crystals are pretty and really absorb the smell, but OH if you step on some in your bare feet! Ouch! I always remove all poohs before I add litter to the compost. Guess if one is not sure its best not to experiment or flirt with disaster.
