Lasagna bed moisture

Hi all. Have a question about lasagna beds. Just finished a couple of 4 x 8 beds enclosed in 2 x 12 boards using about anything I could find for layers. Watered each layer as I added them. Topped with another layer of straw for moisture control. Would appreciate any advise on keeping the beds moist as our past month has been bone dry and 100+ temps. Would you just dig back with your hand to see the top 6" for moisture and water to keep it moist or any other suggestions? Thanks and hope everyone is doing well!

what are your plans for the beds? Planting this year still, or waiting until next? Is there cardboard or newspaper at the bottom? If you have grass to kill underneath, I would avoid pulling back any of the layers.

mustard seeds, I put cardboard down over yard grass and watered each layer as I went. I thought about trying some fall crops in one and let the other set until spring. I will add layers as it settles as well. Maybe a fall crop of green beans, carrots, beets and garlic. It will set a month before putting in any plants. Garlic not until October. Your thoughts?

The one you are leaving until spring - I would do nothing. If windy maybe even a tarp weighted down to avoid dry stuff blowing away in the drought. The fall bed - well, maybe soaker hose with tarp over it if there is no rain. But even that one should be fine for fall planting as you really can just plant into a new bed if you want. My concern would be for stuff not blowing away in the drought. Good the sides are 12 inches tall - are they actually full to 12 inches? Yes - add more as it shrinks. Hoping for rain soon here, also!

Thanks mustard seed. I will keep an eye on how dry the top gets as it sure seems it has been very windy this year. The shallow end of the bed is 12" and the other end is more like 15" deep. Hoping for rain soon too and wishing you the same.
