it's finally hot!

I just wanted to share with my fellow composting friends... Had a compost started in my tumbler which I inherited with the house, and have been merrily adding kitchen scraps and leaves here and there. But a few days ago I got some coffee grounds from Starbucks and added those. What a change to the compost temp! Went out today to turn it and it was definitely steaming! My husband doesn't appreciate it but I knew you folks would...

Yes we do! Congratulations.

Tumblers are a bit more difficult to manage than a bin or pile, but it sounds like yours is doing A-OK so far.

Happy rotting!

High five

RE: it's finally hot!

It probably heated up because of the large mass of coffee grounds, which are actually a weak green. Probably if you had all those kitchen scraps to add at once, it would have heated up too, but small daily additions break down more slowly and don't allow it to heat up. That's OK though, it all leads back to compost, hot or cold. :-]
