| I have several 25-30 foot English Laurel trees on my property and while I love the evergreen look of them, they make a terrible mess with their constantly falling leaves, stems and berries. These leaves have the life span of a plastic bag as they NEVER break down and deteriorate. If I put these leaves through a mulcher, can they be used as a general mulch instead of the bark I have been using? I'm pretty sure they don't have whatever chemical it is I've heard inhibits plant growth as other types of Laurel's have. Any input would be appreciated.

| I have seen some reports that indicate English Laurel leaves might be allelopathic just as Walnut leaves are supposed to be. I have composted Walnut leaves, with many other species of leaves, and have seen no adverse affects where that compost has been used. I have also used Walnut leaves as, shredded, to increase the amount of organic matter in the soil of my turf and have seen that Quack Grass growth was suppressed, but that Perennial Rye grass growth was encouraged. If I was really concerned about allelopathic properties of those leaves I would use them were that property would be of use, somewhere I wanted unwanted growth suppressed to see if they actually did that. |

| We received a load of chipped laurel from an arborist and it is decomposing as well as any of the other chips from fir, maple, alder, etc. If you like the look of the chipped leaves use them. They smell wonderful when first chipped. The smell is gone now since it was over 4 months ago. |
