finished compost never black.....

This is my third year composting and i usually use the finished compost that is started the previous year. Only problem is that it is never black, just med. to dark brown. Do I need more greens?

Thanks in advance.
Stacy

All the compost I have made in the last 51 years has been medium to dark brown, sometimes, depending on the light it may appear almost black.

I get dark brown to black. I do use a high ratio of greens but only because that's what I have the most of, especially during the end of garden and canning season. However, I'm not sure that's what causes my dark color. I've really not worried or thought about it. Interesting!

Medium to chocolate brown is perfect. Compost may look darker when wet.
