Anything that needs it, or on a path you want to keep weed-free.

lazygardens, three bags won't go far on the paths we have. And we have a truckload of chipped wood for that use. I've read that raw cedar shavings shouldn't be used for mulching highbush blueberries, or as bedding for chickens. So they're different from other softwoods. I don't want to harm plants with it.

I suppose I could mulch our one cedar shrub with it? haha...

I have seen a lot of nonsense posted on line about using various mulches and most of it is just that, nonsense.
"Never put wood chips down as mulch because that will tie up Nitrogen."
"Always remove the old mulch before putting new mulch down."
"Mulch should never be deeper than two inches."
Mulches can be as deep as 8 inches."
"Never put down mulches that smell sour."
However I have not yet seen anything about not using cedar as a mulch around Blueberries. What is the reasoning for that?

kimmsr it's more a case of wanting to make the best use of the cedar shavings. We have 16 acres, most of it wooded, near the ocean, and we've used everything from ferns to moose droppings to dead jellyfish washed up on the beach as a mulch - the jellyfish went on the asparagus beds. Besides the usual seaweed, eelgrass, pine needles, and wood chips dumped by the power line crew.

The leaching of thujones/cedar oil from the fresh cedar is what I read could be harmful. Will try to find that link.
