8 years ago when I bought this property, I picked the spot for veg garden. The soil quality was awful to say the least. I am fortunate to live next to a dairy farm and the farmer dumped two big tractor buckets of year old cow manure on top of the garden. We tilled it in and planted. In the fall, we fenced off the entire garden plot and put a couple of pigs on it to raise. They did a beautiful job of turning uo the soil and obviously depositing from their rear end. In the Spring, we butchered the pigs and tilled. I got a good crop of veggies that year. Since then, I have a combination of...cow,pig,Llhama, rabbit, and chicken manure. I have the most awesome soil ! We call it black gold. It literally is black and fine and grows huge awesome veggies. This fall we will put a couple more pigs on the plot to work thier magic again !

Sounds great! Since the Midwest is fried to a crisp, we're all coming over for salad.

LOL Tox ... so with you on that. Thanks for the laugh! feldon, I'm really glad to hear the good news. It's not very often that happens with so many variables in the garden.

feldon, Thanks for sharing about your success. I have only used goat, aged horse manure, and compost made with chicken manure. The color of the soil has darkened a bit. I think that it is about right for my soil type. I see quite a bit of progress for my efforts year after year. Hard work over time really can pay off. I had to look up the West Highlands that you mentioned in your profile. They sound and look like nice a nice type of garden trouble to have. OT to the previous respondents,

Well yes, but it's miserable because of the high humidity. This year there is no humidity - the air feels like it does in New Mexico - no regular rains either, and the temperatures are 5-10 degrees higher than normal. When you put it all together it's a disaster. I'd trade this for 'normal' misery any old day.
