Hi All,

Normally a lurker here but but if you google Adam Guerrero garden Memphis you will find a bunch of stories about a high school teacher who has been ordered to remove a front yard vegetable garden in part because his compost bins are allegedly attracting rats.

Maybe they should also outlaw anything that could be a food source. This includes anything and everything they can chew. I have even seen where they ate the insulation off of wires. The only way to get rid of them is poison or traps.
To be really fare about things if they insist that he gets rid of the compost pile and garden the he should insist that they get rid of anyplace a rat could live and all other possible food sources.
There is no doubt that the rats have always been there but now they have just come out where they could be seen.
Give some people power and they will find a way to use it.

yes rodents always there first, indicates that local authorities not doing their job, as soon as rodents turn up in a gardeners garden the gardener is villain.

and the person who dobbed on the gardener (the most common way the authorities find things out) is probably harbouring the rodents anyway.

rats in particular about the first thing they do when they get into you house is chew electrical/communication wires, not uncommon for them to start house fires.

Here's a link to the posting about Mr. Guerroro's plight on the Organic Gardening forum. Links to petition that can be signed (I sure did).

People need to fight back on things like this.

You get one neighbor who knows some political bureaucrat and starts complaining (or the neighbor IS the bureaucrat), and they start pushing. It doesn't have to make sense, it doesn't have to be reasonable, some people just like to push other people around. A lot of homeowners associations are like that, control freaks.

The first thing is not to lie down and play dead. Guerrero has as many rights as anyone else, and he needs to remember that. Most of that idiocy is 'interpretation' of existing laws, and it's the control freaks who are doing the interpreting.

Many times, if you stand up to the bozos, they will back down, esp if they are dependent on votes.
