Compost walkin'

So I started my first Monday 5 am walk around the neighborhood on the lookout for compostables. Unfortunately, the leaves are still green, so I pretty much got just a couple things, mostly green. I'm thinking of printing off some flyers announcing my intentions to a few choice neighbors...What do you think?

Go for it !

If they're "choice neighbours" then they'll most likely be glad to help you out.

Just be careful how much information you give them, or they'll decide to keep the stuff for themselves =:)

I think the flyers will make a great brown to balance the greens you've been able to find.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Sounds like a great idea! Just don't put the flyers in the mailboxes, as that is illegal and will be removed by the carrier.

You might also list what you want and what you DON'T want, or some people may use your yard as an alternate dump site for all kinds of trash.

If you want to be really annoying, you can stick your flyer under the flags on the mailboxes, or put them in plastic bags and then hang them on the flags. This is how someone who distributes a free advertising circular in our town gets around the law. It became SO annoying having it stuck on the flag that we finally put a little hook under the box so they can hang it there. (No matter what we can't seem to get off their list and I hate having this flyer come in a plastic bag. It used to go straight in the trash... now I at least add the circular to the compost pile.)

Anywho, another thought I had was getting rotting produce from grocery stores. I did see one person say that the store would not give it to them because the owners were afraid the person would then try to bring it back and get a refund. I suspect that's probably actually a real problem. BUT... you might do some dumpster diving. ;-) There is a movement to actually collect and COOK produce found in dumpsters, which I'm not advocating here... but dumpsters may be a great sources of compostables.
