Did anyone answer the question about adding shredded paper to the compost pile? Good idea or not? I also need to know if I can use it for mulch? Thanks for your help.

I add shredded paper to my compost. I'm not sure if it would make a good mulch because I think it would be too likely to blow away.

Ditto what bp said. I add shredded paper to my compost bin especially in the winter. I dump my under the sink buckets in the Earth Machine during the winter and it's easy to empty the shredder while I'm there. Makes fine compost! I wouldn't try and use it for mulch though. Val

Paper shreds could work like leaves for blending into green grass clippings. I use that mixture as mulch in the summer to keep moisture in as well as provide nutrients as it decomposes. The leaves (or paper) serve to keep the grass clippings from matting down too much. It may work if you are interested in trying it. I would not use shredded paper by itself though, just too much risk of not only blowing paper but matting down when it gets wet and shedding water after that.

Newspaper is an excellent mulch. I prefer using sheets of newspaper (6-8) to shredded newspaper, which weeds just shoulder out of their way.

I have used shredded paper assorted ways, and am still exploring its uses because it is an odd paper resource in that the recyclers in our area generally don't take shredded paper, so it usually goes into the landfill. You can add shredded paper to your compost pile, you can use it as a layer in a lasagne bed, and you could certainly use it as mulch, however it is usually bright glaring white in color and IMO looks really ugly! However you could just cover it with shredded leaves or something and easily solve that problem. When we had a guinea pig, I used it for the bedding, and it worked really well. When it was soiled, I would pick up the whole thing in one clump and toss it on the compost pile. Also, the birds LOVE shredded paper as a nesting material. I have observed different birds picking up the strips and carrying them off. Also at least 2 bird nests in my yard where the outer layers of the nest used a lot of shredded paper.
