Moldy Much - Okay to use?

Posted by peaches20 6 PA (My Page) on

What are your thoughts on moldy mulch. I have 4 big bags of mulch that I wanted to use. I had them sitting i nmy garage. The first bag I opened was full of mold. I threw that bag away. Of the last three one looks to be very moldy which I think I'll throw away but the other two have some mold.

Thanks,

Peaches

I think from what i have read, you just need to let anything "gas" off.. ie- let it air out a bit if there is a sour smell.

peaches, keep them! They've already started decomposing is all. You're ahead of the game.

Often the shredded, chipped, wood chips I have handled from the big box stores have had mold in them because the material inside those plastic bags was wet and hot and a good environment for molds to grow. There is no problem with them, except you breathing in those spores so use due care when spreading them on your garden.
There is no good reason to throw them away.

Ever hear of leaf mold? Rhubarb LOVES the stuff!

Thanks for the great information. I will use the bags. The mold is greenish color. That's why I was questioning it.
Thanks,

Nancy
