Life's happy little bonuses.

Hubby and #3 son went to cut wood this week. Around here you can pay for a firewood permit (7.50/cord) that allows you to take downed trees or dead upright ones in the national forest for personal use.

Well, they brought home a truckload of lodgepole pine. Nice! Then they proceeded to cut the poles into firewood lengths. I got home from work and my lawn was covered with sawdust.

At first I was irked. Then I walked out to it and realized this is a wonderful bonus. I get firewood for the winter, and untreated wood shavings/sawdust for my compost. Sweet! I took my heels off and immediately started shoveling the precious stuff off the lawn. I didn't even go in the house and change out of my skirt. You know you are a compost whacko when you stand barefoot in a dress shoveling sawdust because you need browns!

LOL!!! I love it! :-) Sounds like me, casing the neighbors' yards for "compostables".

I love this story.....as a fellow gardener, I can appreciate the visual. Congrats! Sometimes when I get home from work, I stay outside an hour or so before the kids even realize I'm home. :)

I don't know if that's a part of your lawn that gets mowed, but you could mow over the areas covered with sawdust and have a perfect bag of pre-mixed browns and greens. I used to do that with bags of leaves.

I'm so proud to be called a whacko/enthusiast by this group! It is indeed an honor.

We do mow our lawn in that area. But I'm pretty sure 8" of pine shavings/saw dust would have been little much for the mower. The little bit that got left will probably be mulched along with the grass this week.

We have plans to go for 3 more cords next weekend. maybe I'll have them cut the logs to length next to my compost pile so I don't have to scoop it off the grass and move it.

It is a great visual.

Here's a tip. Take one of your husband's big, old shirts that he refuses to part with. One that should have departed 20 years ago. Cut off sleeves to desired length. Use it as a smock for yourself in such a time. My husband's shirts reach to my knees.
