| With unshredded/uncompacted leaves and the addition of sufficient greens to make compost, you can probably figure on about 5-10 times less volume than you started with. |
| What do you reckon if the leaves are shredded? |
| The bags are full stuffed by hand, not compacted. There are some greens within, lawn clippings, etc but it is luck of the draw what I get |
| For many years I have gotten about 50 percent finished compost from my compost bins that are 4 x 4 x 4 and require about 50 of those 30 gallon bags of leaves. Just how much you get from one bag depends on the mix of leaves and whether they are shredded or not. One bag of shredded leaves contains about 10 times as many leaves as on bag od unshredded leaves. |

| "stuffed by hand, not compacted." My guess is 30 gallons of this will yield less than 3 gallons of well finished product but it would depend on the particle size (big leaf versus little leaf) being "stuffed". |

| Shredding leaves in my experience shrinks them by about 4-5 times. |
| Different shredding techniques will result in different volumes. Bagging lawn mower with a "gator" blade and walking slowly is probably a darn good shredder. Using my lawn tractor and my CycloneRake I probably don't get as good. Running them through a chipper/shredder with a screen will grind them down pretty fine as well. I get some bags from town that are shredded down very fine, almost dust like and these bags can be quite heavy. Weight wise, I'd guess a 10-12:1 reduction for these ones. Not sure how much fuel was used to achieve this but it does save on bags. Lloyd P.S. I love the finely shredded bags, boggles my mind that people throw these out. |
