 o
whey in compost bins

Hi folks.
My wife makes terrific yoghurt with nonfat milk. When she makes it, she casts off about 1/2 gallon of whey. I've been putting it in the compost bins, but I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing. As it is, I put about 1/2 gallon in every 2-3 weeks. I put half in one bin and half in another.
Am I doing the right thing?

I don't see why this would be a problem. Have you noticed anything happening in your compost that would lead you to think the whey was messing it up?

Low in fat and protein but high in carbohydrates whey, in small amounts, will not be bad for a compost pile. A 1/2 gallon every couple of weeks should be okay.

Hi Lisanti. No, I haven't noticed anything bad. My compost is pretty rich as it is. I was just worried because I haven't ever read anything about it.

Maybe it's GOOD for the compost, and you have started us all on a search for whey; what's your address again? (Kidding!)

I would assume that since whey is a probiotic solution it would aid and help to speed up composting of the pile, all those added bacteria will want something to munch on.

Whey is almost all water, maybe 5% solids just as a guess, so regardless of what it is, it won't have much of an effect on the pile. But I don't think there is anything harmful at all in it.
