Would you believe 132F??

Couldn't resist taking a picture.

I was expecting to see billows of steam rising from your snow. I'm guessing that the thermometer prong went down into a 'hot' compost pile that was covered/insulated with snow. Right?

Hence the winkey. ;-)

Some of us aren't lucky enough to have snow yet. But we did have a big wind that lasted two days, earlier this week. I think you have all of our air.

Lucky??!!! In October??!! Your definition of lucky and my definition of lucky are obviously not quite the same.

;-)

We had that wind, and the rain from that massive low pressure system (a low, from the States I might add), caused some major flooding. While I didn't flood, this storm effectively ends my compost season. 510 metric tons this year, over a million pounds diverted from the landfill.

eric my small high tunnel is still standing 60 MPH winds here. now I am replacing the south wall with clear 4 mill uv treated polyvinyl. the 4 mill gp construction plastic ripped in many places It is a good time to see if clear lets in too much light.
Lloyd no snow here yet. I dug woims out of my composting trench so a friend could use them for fishing :)

My goodness Lloyd, now, that would be worth a visit. I think you should market your set up as a tourist attraction. My wife loves to travel and I love to garden so this would be the perfect place to visit. Plus, you could even let the clientel make both snow and compost angels simultaneously. Now, that doesn't happen everywhere.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could harvest that heat for our homes Lloyd??

RE: How hot is your snow??

Move the thermometer out of the sun's direct rays and it will show the true temperature.
My brother is always showing what his deck is at by directing us to view his thermometer....which of course, is way up there in temperature....but the guage is sitting behind glass and it increases the temperature ten-fold so, of course, it will show an increased temperature.
Its not true of course....turn the thing around and see it drop like a stone.

Sooooo.....When it's actually 80 degrees outside, your brother sincerely believes it's 800 degrees on his deck? I dare say he has problems beyond thoughtful thermometer placement.

umm, goren, did you not see the grey skies and no shadows in the second photo? Now this picture was taken in sunlight, but wait a minute, aren't those Reotemps like long thermometers that stick way into the compost to measure the temperature of the compost? Yup they sure are, twenty inches in fact.

But wait, how can we tell what's under that paper, could be a tub of hot water and that ole Lloyd is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Well, not really.

;-)

Lloyd

P.S. For those that care, that cloud is called stratus.

 o
RE: How hot is your snow??

Well we avoided the snow thats one nice thing about being a little downwind from Lloyd Got the 4 inches of rain and wind though.. When I waded out to the pile and wiped the frost of my thermometer it was still 120 heck I may get a good winter pile yet

Goren has apparently never had a good compost pile he is welcome to crawl inside mine if that will change the attitude problem

Congrats on the productive year now its back to a long winter of planning(:

RE: How hot is your snow??

Don't waste your time on Goren... Shows up and annoys and then leaves never to return on the same post. Looked him up the other day and aside from a couple of helpful answers on another forum he seems intent on scratching the chalkboard. It's unfortunate since in those helpful answers he does show that he might actually be able to contribute in a positive manner.

I whine about the snow/cold and this kid goes out and makes a mockery of our Winnipeg winter.

Oh to be young again.

RE: How hot is your snow??

I've seen some interesting attempts to harvest heat from compost windrows involving long lengths of PVC and a solar water pump. The problems are 1) the heat doesn't last long enough for it to be truly efficient and 2) it's hard to design a system that readily facilitates turning. Someday someone will figure it out... Will Allen, probably.

RE: How hot is your snow??

Lloyd, that kid can not only stand the cold but pretty talented as well. Enjoyed his song, Thanks.

If anyone wants to look at harvesting heat from compost, Jean Pain was very successful:

Here is a link that might be useful: Jean Pain compost
